How it is calculated
"Interest-free" instalments have not lost the fee — it has moved. The merchant pays it to the card issuer and usually prices it back in, which is why the cash price is often lower than the interest-free instalment price for the same item.
Longer terms lower the payment and raise the total. The same amount over three months and over twenty-four differs several-fold in total fees, and looking only at the monthly figure hides that.
Paying off early cancels the remaining fees. Settling the balance when funds allow saves the unaccrued portion, and most issuers allow it directly in the app.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the rate?
On the issuer's site or app under instalment fees. It varies by term band and cardholder tier, so it is worth checking before committing.
Is interest-free always better?
No. Where the merchant has priced the fee in, the cash price can be cheaper for the identical item. Compare the two before assuming.
Does using instalments hurt my credit?
Payment history and utilisation matter more than the instalment itself. Paid on time it is unremarkable, though a high balance relative to your limit can count against you.
An amortised estimate. Issuer-specific calculation methods, partial interest-free offers and first-month waivers are not modelled. Confirm figures with your card issuer.
