How it is calculated

words per minute = (characters typed / 5) / minutes elapsed accuracy = correct characters / total characters x 100

Typing speed in English is measured in words per minute, where a "word" is defined as five characters including spaces. That convention exists so that long and short words average out — counting actual words would make a passage of short words look faster than it is.

Around 40 WPM is average for an adult who types regularly. Sixty is comfortably quick, and above 80 puts you in a small minority. Professional transcriptionists work well beyond that, but they train specifically for it.

Accuracy matters more than raw speed. Every mistake costs the time to notice it, backspace, and retype — usually more than the speed gained by rushing. Below about 95% accuracy, slowing down makes you finish faster.

Results vary with the passage. Familiar words, common letter pairs, and text without punctuation all type faster than technical or unusual material, so compare runs of similar difficulty rather than single best scores.

Frequently asked questions

How is a "word" counted?

As five characters, spaces included. It is the long-standing convention for typing tests, and it keeps scores comparable across passages with different word lengths.

What is a good typing speed?

About 40 WPM is average for regular computer users. Around 60 is quick, and above 80 is uncommon. Accuracy above 95% matters more than the number itself.

Do corrections count against me?

Speed is based on the characters you ended up typing correctly, and accuracy is reported separately. Correcting mistakes takes time, so heavy backspacing lowers your speed naturally.

Where is my best score kept?

In this browser only. Nothing is sent to a server, so it will not appear on other devices and clearing browser data removes it.
