How it is calculated
Rated economy and real economy are not the same. Official figures come from a standardised test cycle, and real driving almost always falls short of them — more so in city traffic or with the air conditioning running. The rolling average on your trip computer is the more honest input.
Motorway driving is kinder to fuel economy because it avoids the stop-start cycle that burns most of the extra fuel in town. Running the same distance twice — once with your highway average, once with your city average — shows how much the route itself is costing you.
Tolls and parking are not in this figure. Comparing a drive against public transport on fuel alone makes driving look cheaper than it is; add those two before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the manufacturer figure?
You can, but the result will come out low. Rated economy is measured under test conditions and real driving typically lands 10–20% below it.
Does this work for an electric car?
Yes — put km/kWh in the economy field and your charging price per kWh in the price field. Rapid and home charging differ a lot, so use the one you actually pay.
