How it is calculated
Openings are not deducted and offcuts are not added — in practice the two roughly cancel. Rooms with unusual amounts of glazing will leave you with spare; rooms with very little will run tight.
Patterned paper needs more. Matching the repeat wastes material, and the larger the repeat the greater the loss. For a bold pattern, adding 10–20% to this figure is the safer order.
Order one roll more than you need. Dye lots vary between production runs, so a roll bought later to fill a shortfall can be visibly different against the rest of the wall.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a roll cover?
Nominal coverage is higher, but 5.3㎡ of usable area per roll is the working convention once installation waste is allowed for. This calculator uses that figure.
Does this include the ceiling?
Not in the main figure — the ceiling adds roughly the floor area, which is shown separately in the result.
What if the room is not square?
The estimate treats the floor as square to derive a perimeter. Long narrow rooms have more wall than that implies, so calculating room by room gives a better answer.
